Canes Win ACC Title

The 2013 ACC Champions are the University of Miami Hurricanes!

I’ll let that settle in for a second. Few thought it would come this year, I myself included.

After finishing 15-3 in the ACC over the regular season and getting to #3 in the nation, the Hurricanes Men’s Basketball team led by Shane Larkin and Coach Jim Larrañaga not only won the regular season ACC title, but also brought home the ACC Tournament Championship on Sunday after sweeping the North Carolina Tarheels 3 games in a row this year. I’ll let that marinate for a bit as well.

There is a bit of controversy as Miami did not get #1 seeding for the NCAA Tournament. They destroyed No. 1 Duke by over 20 points, won the ACC regular-season basketball championship and continued their unlikely season by defeating North Carolina on Sunday in the ACC tournament final. Miami becomes the first team to win outright ACC regular season and tournament championships and not receive a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

And the last time a team doubled up on the league’s two crowns but didn’t get a No. 1 seed for the NCAAs was exactly … never.

Miami, by the way, has a better RPI (Rating Percentage Index) and strength of schedule — two of the precious measuring sticks for tournament seeding — than Gonzaga. Doesn’t matter as Miami has outperformed everyone’s expectations and will only continue to excel. Stay tuned as Miami faces Pacific on Friday in the first round of 64!
